Black and...Pinwheels!
Today I'm revisiting a block from our Trifle Dish quilt (if you missed that quilt-along, take a look {here}). I'm combining a pinwheel block with plain black squares to make a seasonally appropriate black and orange quilt!
This quilt finishes at 62" x 72".
5 orange fat quarters* OR 10 fat eighths for blocks and sashing squares
7 black fat quarters* OR 14 fat eighths for pinwheel block centers
2 yards background + sashing fabric {Bella Solids 9900-98}
5/8 yard binding fabric {55145-17 | Handmade by Bonnie and Camille}
4½ yards backing fabric
*The orange and black fabrics shown come from a variety of fabric lines. Blacks are from Little Gatherings II by Primitive Gatherings. Olive's Flower Market by Lella Boutique, Handmade by Bonnie and Camille, and Modern Backgrounds Luster by Zen Chic. Oranges are from Hop, Skip and a Jump! by American Jane, Rising Tide Batiks by Moda Fabrics, Chestnut Street by Fig Tree and Co., Sundrops by Corey Yoder, and Desert Bloom by Sherri and Chelsi.

PIECING
- Create half square triangle (HST) units from background fabric and black fabric.
- With right sides together, sew a scant ¼" seam on each side of the line.
- Trim along the diagonal of the HST unit to create 2 half-square triangles.
- Press to the darker fabric.
- Square up each HST to 2½".
- Make 84 background + black HSTs.
- Repeat steps to make 252 background + orange HSTs.
- Lay out block pieces as shown. Assemble in rows and press when complete. Unfinished blocks measure 8½" square.
Make 21 blocks.

Piece together 4 odd rows (1, 3, 5, 7) of alternating blocks with sashing in between as shown:
Piece together 3 even rows (2, 4, 6) of alternating blocks with sashing in between as shown:
